The scenic town of Cloquet is in northeastern Minnesota, on the banks of the St. Louis River. The Fond Du Lac Indian Reservation boundary runs through a section of the city. Water enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity of the St. Louis and the Cloquet Rivers, both of which offer opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing and whitewater rafting. Hikers have many trails in the area on which to enjoy the forested vistas. Campers have many choices in wooded and secluded campsites.

Big Lake Shores Campground

Big Lake Shores Campground is located on the banks of 40-acre Big Lake. Boaters and anglers will appreciate the opportunities to catch bass and walleye--the campground has a boat launch and a dock. The campground offers 25 wooded and secluded tent sites that include a fire ring and picnic table. Tent sites are away from RV campers. The campground has 25 campsites with water and electric. There are bathrooms, showers, a dump station, laundry facilities and--a lounge--at the campground. Sites are rented by the day, week or month. Big Lake Shores is approximately 15 miles away from the Cloquet River, which offers opportunities for whitewater rafting, canoeing, studying nature and fishing.

Spafford Park

Operated by the city of Cloquet, Spafford Park is located on the banks of the St. Louis River on Dunlap Island. The wooded campground has 22 campsites that are secluded and private, some of which have water, sewer and electric. Tent campers will not have difficulty finding a campsite distanced from the RV's. The campground has restrooms, showers, picnic area and a dump station, and pets are accepted. Boaters, canoeists and anglers can utilize the park's boat launch and dock for fishing opportunities in the St. Louis River. The park has a biking and hiking trail, and is approximately a half mile from the city's Pine Valley Park, which offers six additional miles of wooded hiking trails.

Jay Cooke State Park

Jay Cooke State Park is approximately six miles from Cloquet,in the city of Carlton. This heavily forested park offers tent campers 58 private campsites that have fire rings, picnic tables, and access to water. There are 21 sites offering water and electric hookups. For tent campers wanting more seclusion, the campground also has four backpacking campsites and three walk-in campsites that include fire rings and picnic tables. Group camping is available. There are restrooms, showers, vault toilets, a seasonal dump station and a picnic area. The park has 50 miles of hiking trails, 13 miles of mountain biking trails and 32 miles of cross-country ski trails. One of the park's trails meets up with the Willard Munger State Trail.
