Nestled in the Chattahoochee National Forest on the Chattahoochee River, and tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the alpine village of Helen. This northeast Georgia town offers amazing mountain vistas, as well as a wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking and viewing nature. Campers will not be disappointed in their choices of forested campsites.

Unicoi State Park

Two miles north of Helen is Unicoi State Park. Situated in the Chattahoochee Forest and offering spectacular mountain vistas, the 1,063-acre park offers campers a choice of wooded campsites. The campground has 82 sites with water, electricity, fire rings and a picnic table. Tent campers will not have a problem finding a well screened campsite away from RVs. The campground also offers 33 walk-in sites, as well as a squirrel's nest campsite. There are restrooms, showers, a picnic area, pool, swimming, a restaurant and lodge. Anglers can fish the 53-acre lake and utilize the dock. The park has canoe and paddleboat rentals. Hikers will appreciate the 12 miles of nature/hiking trails, some leading into the town of Helen. Mountain Bikers have eight miles of trails.

Jenny's Creek Campground

Located approximately five miles south of Helen is Jenny's Creek Campground. This heavily forested campground is located on the banks of Jenny's Creek. There are tent campsites situated along the creek banks that are large, shady and private. Campsites include sites that are full hookup, or with 30-amp service and water, or with water only, or primitive sites designated for tent campers desiring privacy. There is a laundry facility, restrooms, showers, a fishing pond and camp store, and pets are accepted. Guests can pan for gold or mine for gems. De Soto Falls Recreation area is approximately seven miles away. Hikers can utilize the area's eight miles of trails leading to the Appalachian Trail, as well as two of the park's waterfalls.

Yonah Mountain Campground

Approximately four miles from Helen is scenic and forested Yonah Mountain Campground. The campground offers 26 shady and private sites for tent campers. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring and situated away from any RVs. There are 81 sites with electric and water. The campground has a picnic area, laundry facility, restrooms, showers, camp store and fishing pond, with pets accepted. The campground is approximately five miles from the Yonah Mountain five-mile hiking trail, and rock climbers can climb the southwest portion of 3,166-foot Yonah Mountain. Anna Ruby Falls is approximately six miles away, offering hiking trails and spectacular scenery and wildlife.
