Owatonna is located in the southeastern region of the state of Minnesota. Situated along the Straight River, the town is home to Cabela's Outfitters, which is the largest outfitter in the Midwest. The city operates more than 20 parks on more than 700 acres, offering outdoor enthusiasts opportunities for viewing wildlife, hiking, fishing, canoeing, or cross-country skiing. Campers will find the heavily wooded area offers many campsites that are private and secluded.

Riverview Campground

Two miles south of Owatonna is the Riverview Campground. It offers campers a country setting canopied by large oak trees and is bordered by the Straight River. There are 57 tent sites situated along the river, which offer campers electric, water, fire ring and picnic table. There are 10 tent sites situated along the river that have only a fire ring and picnic table. Tent sites are wooded and secluded away from RV's. Sites for RV campers have 94 full hook-up spots with 20/30/50-amp service. The campground has a heated pool, miniature golf, restrooms, showers, laundry facility, dump station, cabins and a camping store. Anglers can fish from the banks into the Straight River and are approximately two miles from the Straight River Dam, offering more opportunities for boating and fishing.

Rice Lake State Park

Rice Lake State Park is located approximately seven miles east of Owatonna situated on Rice Lake. The water is shallow and marsh-like, with wild rice growing in it attracting many species of waterfowl, which attracts bird watchers to this area. The park is located in a hardwood forest offering 42 campsites, with 26 campsites specifically for tent campers. The sites are shaded, secluded and offer water, fire ring and a picnic table. There are five walk-in campsites, four cart-in campsites and five canoe-in campsites. RV campers have 16 sites offering electricity, with maximum length of RV's 55-feet. The campground has showers, flush and vault toilets and a picnic area. Canoeists and kayakers can canoe Rice Lake. There are eight miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails located within the park.

Hope Oak Knoll Campground

Located approximately two miles outside of Owatonna is the Hope Oak Knoll Campground, which is open April through October. The campground offers 90 campsites with 20 tent sites situated in a secluded and private area of the park. All tent sites have water, electric, a fire ring, picnic table and are situated away from RV's. RV campers have 70 full hook-up sites that will accommodate pull-throughs. The park has a camping store, laundry facility, hot showers and restrooms, with pets accepted. The campground is approximately eight miles away from Kaplan's Woods Parkway housing Lake Kohlmeier. The area offers fishing, boat rentals, boat launch and dock, as well as opportunities for swimming. Hikers can utilize the two miles of trails within the park.
