The beautiful state of Maine is abundant in nature as its rivers, lakes and famous 5,000-foot Mount Katahdin welcome thousands of visitors year after year. The outdoors enthusiast will find no shortage of activities here with white water river rafting, hiking and kayaking. For families who desire active vacations, there are several resorts to accomodate the adventurous with a variety of lodging and recreation.

Northern Outdoors Adventure Resort

The Northern Outdoors Adventure Resort has white water river rafting packages for the entire family, including children, ages eight through 15, regardless of experience. Located in the Forks in Western Maine, it has three campuses for visitors to explore: the Forks Resort Center on the Kennebec River, Eagle Cove Condominium on Wyman Lake, and the Penobscot Outdoor Center near Baxter State Park. Lodging includes cabin tents, log cabins with full kitchenettes and bathrooms or campsites. Amenities include swimming pools, hot tub, on-site full-service restaurants and bar. Activities include hiking, volleyball and canoeing.

Windfall Outdoor Center

Located in the vast wilderness of the Moose River Valley in Jackman, Maine the Windfall Outdoors Center offers a range of accommodations and activities for the outdoor enthusiast. White water river rafting on the Kennebec and Dead Rivers, mountain biking, rock climbing and kayaking are offered along with airplane tours, day hikes and moose watching. Accommodations include campground and RV facilities, log cabin rental, lakeside cabins, and an on-site bed and breakfast and country inn. Select cabins come with scenic views of the Moose River Valley and include three bedrooms, with a full kitchen, whirlpool tub, gas fireplace and a private deck. Family and group packages are available.

Point Sebago Resort

Port Sebago Resort in Southwest Maine is situated on Lake Sebago. This 775-acre resort lists numerous water sports and activities the whole family can enjoy. Children's programs are available with trained camp counselors. Adult activities include plenty of tournaments including bocce ball and volleyball, and golf and tennis. On the water there is sailing with boat rentals available, kayaking and swimming.

Lodging is varied and ranges from two-bedroom vacation home rentals to resort cottages with up to three bedrooms; standard and deluxe park homes, along with park trailers with one to two bedrooms. RV and campsites also are available. Selected cottages are on the marina. Point Sebago has on-site eateries including the Lakeview Restaurant, which serves steak and lobster (children's menu available), Café on the Green for burgers and snacks and Beach Barbeque. A general store also is on-site.
