Campgrounds Near Shelbyville, Tennessee

Campgrounds Near Shelbyville, Tennessee
An old crossroads town in Middle Tennessee, Shelbyville and the surrounding area offer campers a beautiful setting for outdoor activities. To the north is the scenic Duck River, with its opportunities for rafting, tubing and fishing. To the south is Tullahoma, the center of some major action during the Civil War. On top of that, the numerous rural routes provide plenty of scenic country bike rides.

Henry Horton State Park

This state park has a 72 camping sites situated near the banks of the Duck River. 10 of these, plus one large group site, are tents-only and for primitive camping. The remainder of the park's campsites are joint tent and RV sites. These have water and electrical hookups, barbecue grills and picnic tables. The campground is serviced by a pair of bathhouses and a dump station. However, because the bathhouses close between early December and early March, tent-camping (or any camping outside of an RV with its own bathroom) during this same period is not permitted. Leashed pets are welcome, and there is a two-week maximum stay at the campground. The park also has other accommodations in the form of rental cabins and rooms at the park lodge. For outdoor activities, the park offers some easy hiking trails, an archery range and fishing in the Duck River. Henry Horton State Park is 15 miles to the northeast of Shelbyville.

Barton Springs Campground

The Barton Springs Campground, situated on Normandy Lake about 13 miles to the east of Shelbyville, has 67 campsites. Water and electrical hook-ups are available at 40 sites, but 27 have no hookups at all and are, therefore, more tent-friendly. The campground is operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which keeps a manager on-site. The features and facilities include a lakeside swimming beach, a fishing pier, a boat ramp, picnic tables and a shower house. A group picnic pavilion available is also for rent.

River Road RV Park & Horsecamp

Although primarily an RV park, this campground also offers tent sites. It sits on a wooded property, and as the name implies it has facilities for stabling and riding horses. Camping facilities include a shower house, coin laundry and picnic area. The campground offers Wi-Fi access, a playground and courts for volleyball and horseshoes. The Duck River is across the road from the RV park, and the surrounding area offers opportunities for tubing, rafting and fishing. The campground is about 15 miles to the northeast of Shelbyville, not far from Henry Horton State Park.
