Campgrounds Near Townsend, Tennessee

Campgrounds Near Townsend, Tennessee
Camping in Townsend, Tennessee, presents several options for the outdoors enthusiast. This small Great Smoky Mountains community might disappoint those looking for big-city attractions, but not those whose idea of a great vacation means waking up inside a tent and spending the day hiking or biking over trails, tubing and kayaking in rough waters or just watching the day pass while you wait for a bite on your line. The mountains, rivers and lakes of Townsend are analogous to the Las Vegas Strip or Broadway for campers.

Cades Cove Campground

Cades Cove Campground in Townsend is, according to Frommer's, the flattest campground in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. When you exit your tent in this valley campground in the morning you'll see why the mountains surrounding you were named Smoky. This is the most popular camping spot in the park, and that includes bears, so take precautions. Security is light so protect yourself against humans as well. You will find 22 tent-only sites and 139 multipurpose sites. Facilities include bathrooms and showers. Bikes can be rented and used on the 11-mile long Cades Cove Loop Road. Many hiking trails can be found around the area including one that takes you to Abrams Falls. A valid license is necessary to fish in the Great Smoky Mountains and expect to catch a lot of trout. A 6-foot leash is required for allowing pets into the park.
