The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began building a dam on Yegua Creek in 1962, and started their deliberate impoundment of water in 1967, creating Lake Somerville. Covering 11,630 acres with 85 miles of shoreline, Lake Somerville offers a plethora of outdoor recreation opportunities. From fishing, boating and water skiing to hiking, biking and hunting, outdoor enthusiasts find much to do during a visit to the area.

Lake Somerville State Park Birch Creek Campground

Occupying 2,365 acres on the Lake Somerville's north shore in Brenham County, the Birch Creek unit of Lake Somerville State Park is connected to the Nails Creek unit by a 13-mile trailway system. More than 19 miles of trails are open to hikers, bikers and equestrians. Water lovers enjoy boating, swimming, fishing and skiing on Lake Somerville. Birch Creek features tent camping sites, RV sites with water and electricity hookups, group dining hall, fishing jetty, fish cleaning shelter, family fishing pond, trailer dump station, convenience store, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, two double-lane boat ramps and a boat dock.

Rocky Creek Park

Situated on a peninsula on the south side of Lake Somerville, Rocky Creek Park provides campers with various outdoor recreational activities like swimming, boating, fishing, hunting and nature trails. The park has 82 RV sites with water and electric hookups, as well as 121 non-electrical tent camping sites. Park amenities include restrooms with flush toilets, showers, potable water, group shelter, dump station, boat launch ramp and playground.

Yegua Creek Park

Overlooking Somerville Lake, Yegua Creek Park is open year-round, providing recreational opportunities like swimming, fishing, boating, hiking and hunting. The park has 47 RV sites equipped with water and electric hookups, 26 featuring water hookups only and nine tent sites. Park amenities include a boat launch ramp, restrooms with flush toilets, showers, comfort station, dump station, potable water, playground and interpretive trail.
