Overgaard, Arizona Campgrounds
Tucked up in a forest at 6,600 feet, the side-by-side cities of Heber and Overgaard, Ariz., offer visitors a cool escape from the heat of summer in the Sonoran Desert. The towns are only 150 miles from the Valley of the Sun, yet this is a different ecological environment. RV parks in the Heber-Overgaard area offer guests 90-degree days and cool, White Mountain nights in the 60s.

Elk Pines RV Park

Elk Pines RV Park has 68 sites with 20-, 30- and 50-amp electric service for fully self-contained rigs. Internet access is available throughout the park. Guests can rent movies, shop at the park store and watch satellite television in the clubhouse. The park offers daily, weekly and monthly rates, along with special rates for guests who stay for the entire season (April through October).

Arizona High Country Campground

Arizona High Country Campground at Clay Springs, approximately 18 miles east of Overgaard, offers opportunities to watch birds and wildlife. There is cable TV and free Wi-Fi. The campground has 31 sites, including 10 pull-thru, with full hookups and 50-amp electric. The campground is open from April through October and is pet-friendly.

Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest

RVers can spend up to 14 days in one of the three campgrounds west of Heber/Overgaard in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. Visitors who set up camp have access to cold-water lakes, hiking trails, scenic drives and snow play in winter (although the campgrounds may be inaccessible then, depending on conditions).

Aspen Campground, near Woods Canyon Lake, has 133 sites. Fresh water is available, although there are no hookups. Camp sites can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet. There is a dump station nearby.

Canyon Point Campground, 17 miles west of town, has 88 sites, 35 of which have electricity. Rigs up to 75 feet can use this campground. There are a number of group sites to accommodate families and other multiunit gatherings. Campers can use the vault toilets and the waste tank dump station.

Spillway Campground is 22 miles west of town. Sites are available by reservation only. The facility has 26 sites that handle small rigs up to 16 feet. The campground has fresh water and vault toilers, but no hookups.
