New Jersey State Parks & Campgrounds
New Jersey has more than 430,000 acres of state parks. A $50 annual pass provides access to the activities of all 50 parks. Water sports available include swimming, kayaking and boating. Trails for hiking, biking and horse riding are offered. During winter, guests can enjoy skiing or snowshoeing. There are many sites available for those who wish to camp at the parks.

Bass River State Forest

Bass River State Forest, acquired by the state in 1905, is centered around Lake Absegami. The lake provides swimming, boating and canoeing. A trail on the shoreline encourages hiking and horseback riding in warmer weather, skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Hunting and fishing are permitted, alcohol and pets are not.

The forest offers a variety of camping options. Tent or trailer campers can choose from 176 locations with a fire ring and picnic table. All are within walking distance to bathroom and laundry facilities. Large groups who wish to camp together can pick from six group campsites. Lean-tos with hardwood floors and wood burning stoves indoors are handicap accessible. They are also in close proximity to bathroom facilities. There is a nightly fee charged for all camp sites.

Round Valley Recreation Area

Round Valley Reservoir, located in Round Valley Recreation Area, is the deepest lake in New Jersey at 180 feet deep. At more than 2,000 acres, the lake is large enough for fishing, boating and swimming. There are hiking trails of varying difficulty; some of the most rugged lead to the wilderness campsites offered at the area. The natural beauty of the area entices picnickers and campers to the area.

The wilderness campsites are reachable only by boat or foot. The difficult hike to the campsite is at least three miles from parking area. There are 85 tent sites featuring a fire ring within walking distance of drinking water and pit toilets. Each of these sites can house up to six people. There are eight group sites that can accommodate groups up to 25. A nightly fee is charged for these sites.

Wharton State Forest

Wharton State Forest features an outdoor activity for everyone. There are trails for hiking, horse back riding, snowshoeing and mountain biking. Lakes, ponds and streams are available for fishing, swimming and boating. Wildlife observers can look for a wide variety of animals. There are sites for traditional and primitive camping.

There are 99 tent or trailer sites with fire ring, picnic tables and bathroom facilities within walking distance. The parks allow primitive camping throughout the forest, most accessible only by hiking, horseback or by boat. Most sites have water pumps and pit toilets, some areas do not have water. There are also some cabins available. Currently, pets are not allowed in camping areas.
