Switzerland Train Trips

Switzerland Train Trips
One of the best ways to explore Switzerland is by train. Switzerland has the world's longest railroad tunnel, the world's highest railroad line, and more bridges and tunnels per square mile than anywhere else in the world. If you love to hike, sail, or cycle, Switzerland's rail lines provide easy access to high mountain trails, pristine blue-green mountain lakes, and flower dotted meadows filled with grazing wildlife. There are several scenic train trips available for visitors to Switzerland.

Glacier Express

This 7.5 hour train trip through the Swiss Alps from Zermatt to St. Moritz goes over 291 bridges, 91 tunnels, and climbs over the 6,700 foot Oberalp pass. The train has a panoramic glass ceiling and large windows, so you won't miss the view of mountain peaks, alpine pastures and small Swiss villages. In Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn, spend some time breathing in the fresh mountain air and hiking the challenging mountain trails. In St. Moritz, explore the charming resort town that hosted two Winter Olympic games. In winter, ski down one of the steepest slopes in the world, and cross-country ski on the network of 180km of groomed trails. Reservations are mandatory for this train.

William Tell Express

The William Tell Express runs from central Switzerland to the Mediterranean city of Lugano. The journal begins with a 3.5 hour cruise on a large, historic paddleboat across Lake Lucerne. Then, transfer to a panoramic train with glass ceilings for a 2.5 hour trip. You'll travel beneath mountain crags, narrow passages, and hair-raising turns over the Alps. At the end of the journey, the train passes through the largest rail tunnel in the world, the Gotthard tunnel. This tunnel is an engineering marvel and runs underneath the watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean. Reservations are mandatory for this train.
