Costa Rica Jungle Resorts Packages

Costa Rica Jungle Resorts Packages
Costa Rica is one of the best choices in the world for active travelers. Opportunities abound for zip-line tours, kayaking, whitewater rafting, hiking, and wildlife viewing, just to name a few of Costa Rica's many active options. But when you really want to get away from it all, you need to head into Costa Rica's unspoiled jungle. Fortunately, your options for active travel there are limited only by your imagination, and most jungle retreats offer set packages so you know what you're getting into before you leave.

Selva Bananito Lodge

This lodge, near the Caribbean coast and Panamanian border, is so remote that you have to ford a river to get there. Fortunately, all of its standard packages include transportation from any metropolitan San Jose hotel (though not from the airport), so you don't have to worry about your rental car floating away. Depending on the package you select, your activities may include horseback riding through former fruit orchards, learning how to climb a kapok tree, birdwatching at dawn or a grueling jungle hike, including a challenging waterfall rappel. When you return to your individual cabana, you can take a shower with solar-heated water and take a nap in one of the hammocks on your private balcony. Meals here are simple but filling, with vegetarian options available. Dinner will be by candlelight, since the lodge has no electricity---be sure to bring a flashlight.

Playa Nicuesa Lodge

If you thought Selva Bananito was remote, wait till you see Playa Nicuesa, where the only way to get there is a 20-minute boat ride across the blue waters of Golfo Dulce. Once you arrive, you'll be shown to your secluded cabin surrounded by dense forest, home to howler monkeys, whom you may see and will definitely hear around dawn. Playa Nicuesa does have electricity, but you're encouraged to use it sparingly, as it is primarily provided by solar panels during the day and a small generator at night. During the day, your activity options include snorkeling and diving, visiting a local animal sanctuary (wear contacts if you have them, as the free-ranging monkeys may find your glasses irresistible), jungle hiking, deep-sea fishing, learning to cook with ingredients grown on-site, and kayaking on Golfo Dulce. All your meals are included and present an opportunity to meet your fellow guests and swap stories of the day's adventures. Be sure to visit during the dry season, as you may find the humidity too intense at other times of the year.

Selva Verde

For those who prefer a more upscale experience, Selva Verde is a good choice. While it still takes some time getting there (about two hours from San Jose), Selva Verde offers air-conditioning, a pool and relatively easy access to civilization, should the jungle prove too much for you. You can book your room with meals included or pay for meals separately, depending on your plans. During the day, try your hand at whitewater rafting on the Sarapiqui River or take a zip-line canopy tour. For wildlife enthusiasts, there are a number of birdwatching and wildlife tours on foot or by boat. These can be booked a la carte or as part of a package. Should you find anything else of interest in the area (a biking day tour, for example), the front desk can easily arrange it for you.
