Glacier National Park is located in northern Montana on the Canadian border, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A journey here offers the visitor a glimpse into the geological progression that has taken place over millions of years. Here you can fill your days with of exciting adventures or total isolation and relaxation. Places to stay at Glacier National Park include numerous historic lodges, cabins, inns, hotels and campgrounds. Here are three to consider for your exploration of the park.

Lake McDonald Lodge, Cottages and Inn

Situated right on the eastern shoreline of Lake McDonald in the southwest area of the park, it is one of the best models of a Swiss Chalet in the country. Towering 3½ stories with a massive lobby encompassed on three sides with balconies above, this 1914 lodge offers a variety of accommodations. Choose from 100 rustic yet comfy rooms located in the main lodge, a two-level motor inn and duplex cabins. Amenities and services include an exceptional gift shop, lounge, dinning room, grill and pizzeria, nighttime ranger programs, boat and bus tours, and other planned activities. Open from end of May till end of September yearly, with rates ranging from just over $110 to under $200, depending on accommodation selected.

Many Glacier Hotel

Find this isolated five-story hotel on the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake in the northeastern area of the park. Opened in 1915 by the Great Northern Railway, this chalet-style hotel offers a true Swiss setting because of the natural mountain surroundings, the old-style exterior architecture and interior decorations. Select from 214 rooms divided between two chalets consisting of value, standard, lakeside, family or suite categories. Amenities and services include massive wrap-around lakeside balcony, historic boat rides and boat cruises, live entertainment, lounges, gift shop, snack shop, lakeside dining, nighttime ranger activities, fondue delicacies and other planned activities. Open from beginning of June until middle of September yearly, with room rates ranging from around $150 to $300, depending on room type.

Apgar Campground

Located just inside the west entrance and near the Apgar Visitor Center and Lake McDonald, this campground is the biggest in the park. It has 194 campsites with 25 available for 40-foot RVs. Services and activities available consist of a boat launch, dump station, gift shop, campground host, store, restrooms (no showers), water, guided ranger programs, biking, wildlife watching, boating, fishing, hiking and swimming. Numerous other activities and services at nearby Apgar Village. Open year round with primitive camping from April 1 through May 7 and October 13 through November 30 at a rate of $10; otherwise $20 per night, seven nights maximum and first come first serve basis (no reservations taken).
