How to Build Fishing Worm Beds

How to Build Fishing Worm Beds
Whether it is custom fishing rods or gadgets they invent in their garages, fishermen enjoy using homemade gear. Many fishermen have gone a step further and are growing worms for bait. These worms are raised in worm beds, and all you need to build your own is a few basic supplies and a shady area.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Shovel
  • Pick
  • Measuring tape
  • 2x12 Lumber
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Gravel
  • Shredded newspaper
  • Peat moss
Step 1
Select the area for your worm bed and mark the planned perimeter on the ground.
Step 2
Excavate the area within the bed's boundaries to a depth of 14 inches.
Step 3
Add a 2-inch layer of finely crushed gravel to the excavated area to provide drainage and circulation for the bed.
Step 4
Construct a frame made of lumber that fits within the bed you have dug. Set the frame into the ground. This will prevent the soil from collapsing into the bed.
Step 5
Add a mix of some of the soil you dug up, along with some peat moss and shredded newspapers. Next, add your favorite type of worms.
