How to Make Ground Bait for Fishing

How to Make Ground Bait for Fishing
Fishermen have long enjoyed using rods and other equipment that they have made themselves. Bait is no different, as many anglers enjoy making their own bait and some even have guarded secrets about its preparation. You can easily get started making your own groundbait, and maybe you will have a secret family recipe too someday.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Bait box
  • Large pot
  • Sieve with small holes
  • Rabbit pellets
  • Plastic cling wrap, Glad Wrap or similar
  • Spices, flavoring, food bits of your choice
Step 1
Pick a bait box according to the amount of bait you wish to make. Fill the bait box with the rabbit pellets. Add some flavors of your own choosing to make the recipe custom. People add everything from sardines to peanut butter. Something with a strong scent is often preferred.
Step 2
Fill the pot with water and bring it to a boil. Pour enough of the boiling water into the bait box to just cover the pellets.
Step 3
Cover the bait box with plastic cling wrap, and allow it to sit overnight. You will have a "cake" of pellets the next day.
Step 4
Push the caked pellets through the sieve to make a coarse groundbait. If you would like a finer groundbait, push it through the sieve again.
