How to Ride a Bicycle as an Adult
It is never too late to learn how to ride a bike. And once you do, you probably will never forget how. It takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of riding a bike, you will be on your way to hours of fresh air, exercise and possibly saving some extra money by pedaling yourself to and from the local store instead of driving to it with your car.

Things You’ll Need:
  • Bike helmet
Step 1
Put the helmet on your head and strap it under your chin. Learning to ride a bike may result in a few falls, so protecting your head is a good idea.
Step 2
Flip out the kick stand on the bike so it can stand without falling over. Stand over the bike with one leg on either side of the middle bar.
Step 3
Place your hands on the handlebar. Get a feel for the brakes. Notice how one hand controls the front break, while the other controls the rear break.
Step 4
Sit down on the seat. Make sure your feet are still in contact with the ground.
Step 5
Kick back the kick stand with your left foot. Now press down on the right pedal with your right foot. This will begin the turning of the wheels and propel you into movement.
Step 6
Lean slightly to the left if you feel the bike tipping to the right. Likewise lean to the right if you feel the bike tipping to the left.
Step 7
Slow down gradually if you can. Use the rear break to slow your decent. If you are traveling at a higher rate of speed and use the front break, the front tire will stop suddenly, which can result in the bike flipping over. You will also need to put out one or both feet to catch yourself when you stop.
Step 8
Practice often. No one ever learned how to ride a bike in one day, so don't feel bad if you don't, either.

Tips & Warnings

Pushing yourself off is typically the hardest part of riding a bike to master. If you need help have someone steady yourself by holding the handlebar and the back of the bike seat. Then when you have built up enough momentum have the person let go.
Learning to bike ride will most likely result in a few scraped knees. It may be a good idea to have some hydrogen peroxide on hand at your house just in case.
