How to Make Natural Sunscreen

How to Make Natural Sunscreen
When it comes to outdoor recreation, sunburn can be a huge problem. Excursions such as fishing trips, hiking, backpacking and swimming can lead to sunburn when sunscreen is not worn and you are in the sun for long periods of time. Sunscreen can often be purchased at drug stores, but you can also make your own sunscreen and customize it based on your preferences. All you need are a few ingredients and the 15 minutes it takes to create your sunscreen.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Avocado oil Shea butter Beeswax Soy lecithin Aloe vera gel Zinc oxide Essential oil Fragrance oil (optional)
  • Avocado oil
  • Shea butter
  • Beeswax
  • Soy lecithin
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Zinc oxide
  • Essential oil
  • Fragrance oil (optional)
Step 1
Use a chocolate melter or double boiler to melt three tablespoons shea butter and one tablespoon beeswax over medium heat. Ensure that any chunks of beeswax are fully dissolved.
Step 2
Turn the heat to low and add six tablespoons of avocado oil to the mixture and whisk until it is completely dissolved.
Step 3
Add one teaspoon soy lecithin, two tablespoons aloe vera gel, two tablespoons zinc oxide and 15 drops essential oil. Stir until all the ingredients are completely dissolved. You may now add a fragrance oil of your choice if desired---rose, vanilla, and coconut fragrances are generally a good start.
Step 4
Blend the resulting sunscreen in a blender until it is smooth and the consistency of sour cream. Your mixture may turn out slightly thicker or thinner depending on the temperature of the sunscreen and the amount of beeswax used; this is nothing to be concerned about.
Step 5
Spoon your sunscreen into an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place. Apply as needed on the body as both a moisturizer and sunblock.

Tips & Warnings

Try mixing scents for better smelling sunscreen.
Always wear oven mitts when working with hot stoves and pots.
