How to Tie Crank Bait to a Fishing Line

How to Tie Crank Bait to a Fishing Line
Crankbaits are designed to imitate the swimming action of a baitfish at various depths in the water. Its lip, which is either installed or molded onto the front of the lure, determines the depth to which the bait dives. Crankbaits feature a screw eye, located in the nose of the bait, that enables you to attach the lure to a line or leader. Choosing a knot that forms a loop around the screw eye will allow the bait to swim and perform in the water as designed without drag from the line.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Crankbait
  • Fishing line or leader
  • Scissors
Step 1
Hold the crankbait so that the front eye is easily accessible. Form a simple overhand loop in the line 3 inches from the free end of the line or leader. Feed the main fishing line or leader through the eye of the lure.
Step 2
Pull the free end of the line back up and through the overhand loop. This will form a main loop around the eye of the crankbait.
Step 3
Wrap the free end of the line around the main line three times above the overhand loop. Turn the free end down and feed it through the overhand loop to form an elongated loop beside the knot.
Step 4
Pull the free end up and through the elongated loop. Moisten the line with water or saliva and pull tight.
Step 5
Adjust the size of the loop around the eye of the lure as you pull the knot down tight. Form a loop around the lure eye that is 1 inch or so long. Trim the free end of the line to within 1/8 inch of the knot with scissors.
