How to Hook Mullet for Flounder Fishing

How to Hook Mullet for Flounder Fishing
Flounder and mullet are saltwater marine animals. When fishing for flounder, utilize a flounder rig to lure the fish to your line. Because mullet can be fished from a pier, boat or surf, it offers several fishing options when angling for flounder. Fishing for flounder requires a specific setup, which you can rig in minutes. Because Flounder swim deep and hide in the sand, you'll need to get your line as close to the bottom as possible to reach this fish.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • 10- to 15-pound test line
  • Snap swivel
  • Pyramid sinker
  • Wide-bend hook
Step 1
Tie a snap swivel, which is designed to eliminate line tangles, to your main line using a clinch knot. Pass the tag end of the line through one end of the snap swivel--each end contains an eyelet. Wrap the line around the standing end five times. Thread the end back through the loop, which will be adjacent to the eye. Pull the end under the last turn. Cut excess line.
Step 2
Fasten a 1- to 2-oz. pyramid sinker to the snap swivel, which will cause the hook rig to drape in a fixed position below.
Step 3
Tie a wide-bend hook using a clinch knot.
Step 4
Pass the underside of the mullet, near the head, along the hook point, and pass the hook into the fish's mouth. Press the sides of the body to maintain control as the mullet is eased onto the hook. Pass the hook point upward; the barb juts out from the upper lip.

Tips & Warnings

Wear fishing gloves when handling a fishing hook to avoid an injury.
