How to Lubricate a Shimano Stradic 2500 Reel
The Shimano Stradic 2500 series reel is part of the Shimano metal series of spinning reels. Weighing just over 9 ounces, the reel is well suited for freshwater fishing with light to medium-weight tackle. As with any fishing reel, regular cleaning and lubrication will keep the reel operating properly and reeling in fish for years to come. The Shimano Stradic 2500 reel has a maintenance port, which allows easy accessibility to the reel's main gears, making the lubrication process simple.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Towel
  • Bowl
  • Cloth
  • Cotton swabs
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Reel oil
Step 1
Set up your work area by placing a clean towel or cloth on a flat surface such as a table. Set a bowl to the side to hold any removed reel parts, so they are not lost or misplaced during the lubrication process.
Step 2
Remove any fishing line on the reel, as this will make the complete lubrication of the Shimano Stradic 2500 reel easier.
Step 3
Remove the Shimano's reel handle by twisting it in a counterclockwise direction until it lifts from the reel body. Place the handle in the bowl.
Step 4
Turn the drag knob in a counterclockwise direction for removal of the reel's spool assembly. Place the assembly into the bowl with the handle.
Step 5
Moisten a clean cloth and cotton swabs with isopropyl alcohol. Wipe off the exterior of the reel, removing excess oils and dirt before starting the lubrication process. Wipe off the reel handle and drag knob, to clean off any oils or dirt.
Step 6
Apply a light application of reel oil to the line roller assembly to keep the flow of fishing line smooth and operating properly. Lubricate the assembly after every other use to extend the life of the Shimano Stradic 2500's roller bearing, according to the Shimano Corporation.
Step 7
Lubricate the drive gear bearing by applying a drop of reel oil inside the opening of the reel's handle.
Step 8
Twist the maintenance port above the handle opening open. Apply one to two drops of reel oil inside the port to lubricate the additional drive gear bearings.
Step 9
Apply a drop of reel oil on each side of the bail arm, flipping it open and closed to lubricate the assembly. This will keep the bail operating smoothly and not locking while in use.
Step 10
Reverse your steps to reassembly the reel, once you have finished lubricating it.

Tips & Warnings

Wash off the reel with fresh water after every use. This keeps parts from corroding and a build up of dirt, salt and other debris from forming on the reel and keeping it from operating properly.
Do not use a degreaser on any part of your Shimano reel, as it will cause damage to the internal working parts.
