How to Loosen Drag on Saltwater Fishing Poles

How to Loosen Drag on Saltwater Fishing Poles
If the test line on your fishing reel is too tight, it can easily break during the retrieval process. You want your fishing line to be firm but not so tightly wound that there is no drag. Loosen the drag on your fishing reel so the next time you go fishing you can cast your test line without worrying that a big catch will break the line. Pay attention to your test line with each new bait. Some are heavier than others and require more pull or give in the line.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Test line
Step 1
Locate the drag mechanism, which is, if you have a saltwater spinning reel, a knob on the top of the reel or a metal tab on the handle of the reel if you have a saltwater casting reel.
Step 2
Loosen the drag. Rotate the knob in a counterclockwise direction by hand. The drag will loosen as you steadily rotate the knob counterclockwise. As you loosen the drag, there will be less pressure along the line.
Step 3
Pull the line by hand. Wear fishing gloves for a stronger grip if necessary. Pull the line until the drag releases the amount of line you require. When loosening the drag on your saltwater fishing pole, consider the weight and size of your bait.

Tips & Warnings

Have your reel cleaned annually to remove salt and other dirt buildup.
