How to Make a Humming Bird Feeder to Mount on a Window
Hummingbirds are one of the smallest and fastest birds in the bird kingdom. There are 27 species in the U.S. Birdwatchers can attract hummingbirds to their yards with a hummingbird feeder, a project which can be shared by the whole family. By attaching a simple suction cup to the feeder, it easily hangs on a window.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Sports drink bottle
  • Drill
  • Pliers
  • Paper towel
  • Mayonnaise lid
  • Hot glue gun
  • Plastic or silk flowers
  • Suction cup
Step 1
Use a medium-sized sports drink bottle that has a larger lid as the hummingbird feeder. You will also need a larger cap from something like a mayonnaise bottle to attach to the bottom.
Step 2
Remove the cap from the sports drink bottle and peel off any paper/plastic lining inside the cap. Drill several holes in a circular direction around the center of the cap. Use a pair of pliers to punch out the center area of the drilled area of the cap, creating one large hole.
Step 3
Poke a piece of paper towel through the center of the hole in the cap. Allow approximately two inches of the paper to stick out of the bottom of the cap.
Step 4
Peal the plastic/paper lining off the inside of mayonnaise cap. Wad the piece of paper sticking out of the end of the sports drink cap and place it inside the mayonnaise cap. Be sure the bottom of the sports drink cap does not lie flat against the mayonnaise cap and the paper towel is keeping them from touching each other.
Step 5
Use a preheated glue gun and glue three sides of the sports drink cap to the inner rim of the mayonnaise cap. Allow space between each area where you glue the caps together for the nectar to sit. Let the glue thoroughly cool before you remove the paper towel.
Step 6
Glue a plastic suction cup to the top side of the sports drink bottle and allow the glue to cool and set.
Step 7
Separate funnel-shaped plastic or silk flowers and glue them around the outer rim of the mayonnaise cap. You can also glue the flowers around the outer sides of the bottle itself. Using red flowers will probably get the most attention from hummingbirds.
Step 8
Fill the bottle with hummingbird nectar and screw the cap back on the bottom of the bottle. The liquid should fill the bottom of the mayonnaise cap. Wet the end of the suction cup and stick it to your window.

Tips & Warnings

Make your own hummingbird nectar by boiling 4 cups of water with 1 cup of white, pure, granulated sugar. Melt the sugar in the water and allow it to cool in the refrigerator. Place the mixture in your hummingbird feeder.
You can also paint the feeding bottle red.
Using red dye in your hummingbird food is not necessary or advised, as it can be harmful to the bird's kidneys.
