How to Install an RV Sewer Vent

How to Install an RV Sewer Vent
RV owners must perform routine maintenance such as flushing holding tanks and regularly cleaning toilets and other facilities to reduce odor and extend the life of their RV's sewer system. Sludge can become lodged in holding tanks, which can lead to harsh odors. Failure to clean holding tanks and vent the toilet can trap odors, which linger throughout the RV. The best option for combating unwanted odor is to install a sewer vent.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • 4 wheel chocks
  • Silicone sealant
  • T vent
  • Ladder
  • Screening
  • Wire ties
  • Scissors
Step 1
Park your RV on level ground. Choose a roadway paved with asphalt or concrete. Grassy areas and gravel roads may not provide sufficient footing.
Step 2
Pack each tire with a wheel chock, which is a wedge used to secure vehicles. Climb to the top of the RV with a ladder.
Step 3
Remove the cap from the gray water tank vent. Unscrew it by hand.
Step 4
Apply a silicone sealant along the length of the groove surrounding the vent opening.
Step 5
Position the opening of the T vent (named for its shape) over the gray water tank vent opening. Press down to fit the T vent securely in place.
Step 6
Cut a sheet of screening with scissors and slide it over the openings. Secure with wire ties, which will also prevent insects from flying down the vent.

Tips & Warnings

Flush your holding tanks regularly to eliminate bacterial growth and buildup.
Always take caution when climbing an RV ladder or utility ladder.
