How to Change the Color of Bait Fish

How to Change the Color of Bait Fish
Many fish have the ability to see a variety of colors and an object that provides contrast is more easily seen in dark or murky water according to Diana Vos, a project wild coordinator of Utah's Wild Notebook. This is one of the reasons fishing lures are available in a wide variety of color and why some fisherman attempt to dye bait in order to improve its visibility and increase the likelihood of a catch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Bait dye
  • Tall plastic cup
  • Water
  • Container with lid
  • Refrigerator

Live Bait Fish

Step 1
Purchase a bait dye formulated for use on live bait. Some dyes are toxic and may kill the bait fish during or shortly after the dyeing process.
Step 2
Pour the dye into a tall plastic cup. Make sure that the cup is secured so that it will not tip over and spill the dye.
Step 3
Mix water into the dye if directed by the packaging instructions. Some bait dyes are ready to use while others are in powder form and must be mixed with water before they can be used.
Step 4
Attach a bait fish to your fishing hook.
Step 5
Dip the bait fish directly into the cup of bait dye. Leave it in the cup for five seconds and remove. If you are not satisfied with the color, dunk the bait fish again to darken the color.

Dead Bait Fish

Step 1
Pour enough bait dye into the container holding your bait fish to saturate the fish.
Step 2
Cover the container and place it in the refrigerator.
Step 3
Refrigerate the bait fish in the dye for at least three hours or overnight to allow time for the dye to be absorbed.
