How to Repair a Dry Storage Seal in a Kayak

How to Repair a Dry Storage Seal in a Kayak
A kayak has dry storage, which is used to keep gear dry on your travels. A leak into this area will do you no good. It will cause clothing, supplies or possibly food to get wet and might fill up enough to sink the boat. A leak needs to be repaired as soon as it is discovered, and can be done even if you are in the middle of a trip. The main thing is to get out of the water, and make sure you carry a few key supplies with you for such emergencies.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Water
  • Towel
  • Silicone sealant
  • Permanent marker or tape
Step 1
Add water to the storage section of the kayak and watching for any water exiting the area or observe the leak while on the water. A leak in the storage area can come from a few sources.
Step 2
Apply a piece of tape to the area of the leak, or mark it with a permanent marker.
Step 3
Reseal the hatch cover edge if that is where the issue is. Add a new line of silicone seal to the rim. Remove and clean the hatch before doing this.
Step 4
Fill a leak in the bulkhead with a silicone sealant. This will withstand constant contact with water. Add another line of silicone around the inside of the storage area.

Tips & Warnings

Call a repair shop for a replacement if the hatch cover itself is leaking. These are typically difficult to seal and are best replaced. For a quick fix out on the river, use a tape that sticks even when wet. Place this on the leak until you can get out of the water.
