Attaching Bicycle Panniers

Attaching Bicycle Panniers
If you're doing any long-distance cycling or bicycle commuting, you'll probably want to add panniers to your bike. Sometimes called "saddlebags," panniers attach to front or rear racks on your bike and provide storage space for gear, food, groceries, books or whatever your particular needs are. Panniers can be added relatively easily onto bikes with existing front or rear racks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Panniers
  • Bike with a rack
Step 1
Slide the upper hooks of the panniers over the rail on the edge of your bike's rack. Most panniers will have two to three hooks on the top inside edge that slide over the edge of the rail.
Step 2
Take the elastic cord with a hook that's attached to the top of the pannier and run it down along the backside of the pannier (this is the side that faces the wheel). Many panniers will have a ring, bar, or loop that the elastic cord runs through. Thread the cord through this attachment, It prevents the pannier from swinging away from the bike when turning or leaning the bike.
Step 3
Attach the hook at the end of the elastic cord to the bottom of the rack near the end of the chain stays. This stretches the cord tight and holds the pannier tight onto the top of the rack.
Step 4
Undo the hook at the bottom when you need to remove the pannier. Lift the pannier off of the top of the rack to remove.

Tips & Warnings

Your bike must have a rack that will accommodate the panniers you plan to attach to it. If you're buying a rack and panniers at the same time, purchase them as a complementary set to eliminate potential problems.
