How to Replace RV Mattresses

How to Replace RV Mattresses
Recreational vehicle (RV) mattresses range from comfortable to excruciatingly uncomfortable. Your RV mattress may be too firm or too soft for your liking. On the other hand, maybe your once comfortable mattress has seen better days and is now old and worn out. If your RV mattress is giving you a restless sleep, replace it with a new one. Have sweet dreams on your new mattress and wake up refreshed for a new day of adventures.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Measuring tape
Step 1
Measure the length and width of the existing RV mattress, using a measuring tape. Measure the thickness of the existing mattress as well if the RV has a low ceiling. Write the measurements on a piece of paper.

RV mattress sizes differ from standard home mattresses and sometimes even differ from RV to RV. Mattresses made for RVs are usually shorter than household mattresses. Measuring the mattress allows you to purchase the correct size for your RV.
Step 2
Decide if you want to purchase an RV mattress or a standard household mattress. If you want to purchase a standard household mattress, measure the available space in the RV to make sure one will fit. Removing the headboard at the head of the mattress, if your RV is equipped with one, frees up a few inches of additional space for a larger mattress. Remember to consider walking room around the mattress when determining how large a mattress your RV can accommodate. Write down the maximum mattress measurements that will fit in your RV if you are considering purchasing a larger mattress.
Step 3
Shop for an RV mattress at an RV supply store or RV mattress supplier. Bring your measurements with you to assure you buy the right size of mattress. If you can't find a mattress that you like or that will fit in your RV, consider having a custom RV mattress made for your RV. Custom RV mattress manufacturers make mattresses to your specifications. They offer several choices regarding the firmness of the mattress and types of materials the mattress is made of. Ask your local RV supplier to refer you to a custom RV mattress manufacturer.
Step 4
Purchase a standard household mattress from a furniture store if your RV is large enough to accommodate one. Bring your measurements with you when shopping to make sure the mattress size will meet your needs.

Tips & Warnings

Standard household mattresses are easier to find, are available in a wide variety of styles and are generally less expensive than RV mattresses. RV mattresses typically weigh less than standard household mattresses, which is a benefit if you are concerned about minimizing weight in your RV.
