How to Display OH Numbers on a Kayak

How to Display OH Numbers on a KayakKayaks are classified as hand-powered recreational boats in Ohio. The Department of Natural Resources in Ohio requires that all boats of this class be registered with the state and have this registration displayed on the boat. Similar to mainland vehicle registration, you will have to register your kayak with the DNR and pay registration fees to receive the proper registration numbers and tags. These decals must then be displayed in your kayak in accordance with state law, otherwise you will be subject to a penalty. The DNR offers two choices for registering your kayak.

Difficulty: Moderate

Traditional Method

Things You’ll Need:
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Soft cloth
  • Registration decals
Step 1
Apply rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth and wipe the kayak's bow on both sides. Clean the top 5 to 6 inches and wipe toward the stern of the boat about 18 inches.
Step 2
Place the registration stickers on the starboard side of the kayak from your right to your left. Apply the two letters from the end of your registration number to the front of the bow. Leave a 1-inch space to the left, then apply the four digits of the registration number. After another 1-inch space, place the "OH" stickers before the four digits.
Step 3
Apply the stickers to the port side from your left to your right. Put the "OH" stickers at the front of the bow at the top of the kayak's side. Leave a 1-inch space, then stick the grouping of four numbers closely together. After another 1-inch gap, place the two letters from the end of the registration number onto your kayak.
Step 4
Place the state of Ohio Registration decal on the bow about 6 inches from the end of the registration number toward the stern of the kayak. Do this on both sides.

Alternative Method

Step 1
Choose the location you will attach the registration label or registration number stickers. You have four options: The transom; the top of the bow; the outside of the kayak on the port side; or the inside of the kayak on the starboard side.
Step 2
Clean the location you have chosen for the sticker with a soft cloth dabbed in rubbing alcohol.
Step 3
Place the decal firmly onto the kayak. Orient the sticker so that it can be read from outside the boat. For example, if you apply the sticker to the top of the bow, apply it so that the sticker can be read from a boat in front of you. When seated in the kayak, the sticker will appear to be upside down.

Tips & Warnings

Ohio registration numbers must be visible from outside the kayak when the vessel is in use.
