How to Renew a U.S. Passport in Canada

How to Renew a U.S. Passport in Canada
Renewing your United States passport while in Canada is a simple process, and can be done either by mail or by going directly to a U.S. embassy or consulate in Canada. If you can apply by mail, that is the preferred method. It will take from four to six weeks to receive your passport once your renewal application is sent, and that time period can be cut in half if you expedite the service, for an extra fee of $60. If you need the renewal in less time than that, contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to see whether you are eligible for special service.

Step 1

Make sure your passport is not damaged and that you can send it in with your application for renewal. Also, if it was issued before you were 16 years old, if the passport was issued more than 15 years ago, or if your name has changed and you cannot document that, you cannot file by mail and will have to go to a consulate or embassy for renewal.
Step 2
Fill out the DS-82 form online, or print it out and fill in the form in black ink. Sign and date the form.
Step 3
Send the form along with your current passport, the passport fee, passport photos and name change documentation (if applicable) to the address provided on the form. Sending the application in a manner that can be tracked is recommended. The standard fee for an adult passport is $100 as of 2010. Passport photos must be in color and 2 inches x 2 inches in size.
