How to Cook with a Camping Stove

How to Cook with a Camping StoveIf you are planning a camping trip, more than likely you will be cooking on a camping stove. These stoves are no more difficult than operating your stove at home. If fact, anything you can cook on your stove top at home, you'll be able to make at the campsite with your camp stove. By following a few basic set-up tips, your camp stove will be cooking in no time at all.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Camp stove
  • Stable surface
  • Propane bottles
  • Food
Step 1
Set your camp stove on a stable surface such as a picnic table or camping kitchen, if you have one. You don't want your stove falling over while in use.
Step 2
Open your stove and attach the propane bottles to it. Screw your propane bottles/bottle onto a hose with a fitting on the end.
Step 3
Light your camp stove by turning on a fuel knob to low heat and using a match or lighter to light it. Adjust the fuel settings by turning the knobs located on the front of the stove. This will allow you to cook at a desired temperature. Camp stoves are basically like cooking on smaller gas stoves.
Step 4
Use metal or cast iron cooking pots on the stove. Most camp stove burners will accommodate either one large and one small pot or two medium pots on the stove at the same time. You can purchase pots specifically designed for camping, but the ones you already have at home will also do just fine.
Step 5
Cook any foods you would usually cook at home. You can fry, boil, saute or use any other cooking process done on a regular stove.

Tips & Warnings

Wipe up any mess that gets on the stove as you cook. This will make cleaning the stove after your camping trip much easier.
Do not use any substance that can melt on your camp stove.
Be sure to turn your fuel knobs fully off when the stove is not in use.
Use caution with children around the stove while cooking.
