How to Clean Aluminium Bicycle Wheels

How to Clean Aluminium Bicycle Wheels
Most bicycles, whether they're built for the road or the trail, come with aluminum wheels. These wheels are much lighter than the steel wheels that preceded them, and they last longer by resisting the elements and because they are made of a structurally resilient metal. Cleaning aluminum wheels is a relatively easy process, requiring just a few simple cleaning materials and a little time.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Aluminum cleaner or dish soap
  • Bucket
  • Soft cloths
  • Scrubbing pad
  • Aluminum polish
Step 1
Wet a soft cloth with a cleaning solution made of equal parts water and soap. Wipe down each wheel gently to get any loose dirt and sediments off the wheel.
Step 2
Soak the wheel in water and cleaning solution and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes.
Step 3
Vigorously rub the the wheels with the cloth to remove the dirt and sediments. Frequently dip the cloth back into the cleaning solution to keep the wheel soaked.
Step 4
Use a scrubbing pad to remove any tough dirt on the aluminum.
Step 5
Rub on an aluminum polish using a dry, soft cloth once the wheel is dry. You can let the wheel air dry or wipe it dry with a cloth. This will help protect the aluminum from the elements, prolong its cleanliness and help your wheel last longer.

Tips & Warnings

If the cleaning solution doesn't seem strong enough, make another mixture of two-thirds soap or detergent mixed into one-third water. You may also go with a more potent ratio, if necessary.
