How to Make Your Own Fishing Lures

How to Make Your Own Fishing Lures
Fishing is like any other hobby. It costs money. Once you have a license you will need a rod, line, tackle box and lures. You can avoid one cost by making your own lures. Plastic worms are not difficult to make and once you purchase the initial equipment, the cost on your part will be reduced. You can make the styles that you find work best for you and experiment with different colors.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Liquid plastic Plastic molds Rubber molds Liquid plastic color Pan to heat plastic, with a pouring indentation built in Hotplate Shallow pan with water in it

  • Rubber molds
  • Liquid plastic color
  • Pan to heat plastic, with a pouring indentation built in
  • Hotplate
  • Shallow pan with water in it

Step 1
Shake the plastic well before pouring it into the heating pan. Do not use more than a cup to a cup and a half at a time.
Step 2
Turn the burner on at medium heat and watch it carefully. Stir the plastic frequently to avoid scorching. The plastic will turn clear as it heats up. It is ready when it is similar to syrup. The plastic only needs to heat to around 350 degrees.
Step 3
Add the liquid plastic color to the plastic and stir it in. Add it slowly so you do not create a darker color than you like. You can find the color in supply stores, hobby stores, or online.
Step 4
Pour the plastic into the mold of choice and allow it to cool. The molds can be in whatever shape you choose, but worm shape would work best for this project. They can be picked up at supply stores, fishing stores, or online. A link below takes you to a site that sells all the supplies you would need.
Step 5
After a couple of minutes the worm should be cooler and have set up enough to remove from the mold. Pull the worm out and place in a pan of cool water to finish.

Tips & Warnings

To make a multi color worm use more than one pan and heat the plastic at the same time. Create the two or more different colors and pour them into the mold one right after the other. They must be poured while they are still hot in order to stick together. To make a harder plastic, add plastic hardener to the liquid before it is heated. To create an even softer plastic add plastic softener to the liquid after it is heated or during heating. When using fluorescent colors, it is best to mix them into the liquid before heating. It creates a brighter color than adding it after heating.
