How to Move Your Vehicle by Train in France

How to Move Your Vehicle by Train in France
If you are planning to take a trip around France but are short on time, a train is an excellent way to travel. Of course, you may still require transportation at your destination. Rather than renting a vehicle you could choose to transport your own vehicle by rail. Transporting a vehicle by train in France is a common occurrence and is fairly simple to do. Depending on the company you choose, you may travel on the same train as your car, or separately.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Car Spare car key Vehicle documentation
  • Car
  • Spare car key
  • Vehicle documentation
Step 1
Plan your trip. Many companies will transport vehicles by train in France. A popular choice is SNCF's Auto/Train, which is the only company that runs year round. However, the Auto/Train only transports cars---not passengers---so you will have to arrange your own travel to your destination. Visit the SNCF website to look up destinations and times.
Step 2
Book tickets for transporting yourself and your car. Work through the vehicle transport company or contact Rail Europe, a popular travel agent that specializes in European rail travel. Have your vehicle information handy when making the booking. Pick up your tickets at the ticket office on the day of departure or use the self-service points up until the day before your departure.
Step 3
Gather together your documentation. Make sure you have your tickets, all of the vehicle documentation as requested by the train company, and a spare key for your vehicle.
Step 4
Drop your vehicle off at the station. Remember to remove any valuables, such as a GPS device, but you can leave items that are strapped to your vehicle, such as a canoe. Take your documentation and spare key and check your vehicle in with a train representative. They will instruct you on how to load your vehicle onto the train.
Step 5
Make your way to the destination. If you are traveling with your vehicle, ask the attendant to direct you to where the passengers board. If you booked with Auto/Train, you will either go to the platform for your own train or take a shuttle to the passenger station.
Step 6
Retrieve your vehicle. Your ticket will show you where and when your vehicle's train is to arrive. Make your way to the platform and show your documentation to the agent so your vehicle can be quickly unloaded.
