How to Spend the Holidays in a 10th Mountain Division Hut

How to Spend the Holidays in a 10th Mountain Division Hut
Spend the holiday season in one of the 10th Mountain Division's 29 huts located in the backcountry of the Rocky Mountains. Ski hut to hut in Colorado's pristine backcountry and stay the evening in one of 10th Mountain's cozy, remote shelters. Hut trips are for experienced backcountry skiers with good route finding and avalanche safety skills. Skiers must travel over 6-7 miles of physically demanding terrain to reach each hut. The hut system is popular, so reserve your spot for next holiday season at least a year in advance.

How to Plan a Hut Trip to a 10th Mountain Division Hut

Things You’ll Need:
  • Guidebook
  • Topographic maps
Step 1
Gather information about the 10th Mountain Division Hut system. Use websites and guidebooks to determine which hut system is best for your group's abilities and experience level. You also can call the 10th Mountain at (970) 925-5775 if you have questions.
Step 2
Choose a group leader. Decide on who will make the reservations and be responsible for communicating with the group. The group leader also is responsible for having all members of their group complete the Waiver and Release for 10th Mountain.
Step 3
Reserve your trip. The hut system is so popular that reservations for the holiday season need to be secured a year in advance. See more details about reserving a hut below.
Step 4
Purchase topographic maps and know how to use them. Make sure you study the area and terrain before you go. Good route finding skills are necessary before heading into the backcountry.
Step 5
Consider hiring a guide if you are a first-time hut user.

How to Make a Reservation for a 10th Mountain Division Hut

Step 1
Call the hut reservation line at (970) 925-5775 to inquire about hut openings for the holiday season. The 10th Mountain Division Hut system is popular, so acquiring a reservation can be difficult. Most holidays, weekends, and midwinter dates are filled a year in advance.
Step 2
Join the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association to participate in their lottery reservation system.
Step 3
Fill out the lottery entry forms by selecting your preferred dates and hut choices for the following winter. These forms are mailed to all members of the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association by early January and must be received by mid-February. The Association draws an entry form, reads through their trip choices, books a trip and then mails out confirmation notices.
Step 4
If not selected during the lottery, association members can then call-in during April and May and book a trip from the remaining openings.
Step 5
Call the reservation line beginning June 1 to make a reservation if you are not an association member.

Tips & Warnings

Consider requesting a trip on weekdays or early in the season to have a higher chance of getting a reservation.

Check out the "Hut Space for Sale" bulletin board on the 10th Mountain site to see if someone is selling a reservation that you might be interested in.

Huts in the 10th Mountain system are in highly prone avalanche areas. Check the avalanche forecast before you go.

Everyone in your group must carry avalanche safety gear and have experience in evaluating avalanche risk.
