How to Make Bamboo Fishing Rods

How to Make Bamboo Fishing Rods
Fishing rods can be made out of different materials, but the basic old fashioned fishing rod is a cane pole or bamboo rod. It is simple in its construction and gets the job done fairly well if you have the patience. There is no reel normally attached to the basic bamboo pole, so there isn't much to do after it is cast. That being said, they are a great project to do with kids and a sure way to get them interested in fishing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Bamboo cane tapered down on one end 20 pound fishing line Hooks Bait Float
  • Bamboo cane tapered down on one end
  • 20 pound fishing line
  • Hooks
  • Bait
  • Float
Step 1
Take the bamboo shaft and cut it to the desired length. Remember that the pole will need to be long enough to reach out into the water. You don't want to be too close or the fish will be scared away.
Step 2
Tie the line around the tapered end of the pole. A notch can be made so that the line doesn't slip off the bamboo. Use a double knot to make sure the line won't come undone. The line should be about 20 feet long, so that it can be cast a fair distance.
Step 3
Attach a hook to the other end of the line and put a float a few feet up so that the line can be watched.
Step 4
Attach a few more weights to the line below the primary weight, so that the line will be steady. (This is recommended, but optional.) You are ready to fish.
