How to Renew a Current Passport

How to Renew a Current Passport
If you plan on a foreign adventure such as hiking through the Lake District of England or kayaking down the Amazon River of Brazil, make sure your passport does not expire until at least six months after your dates of travel. Otherwise, many countries will not let you enter. If your passport expires within the six months, you'll need to renew it, but allow at least four weeks for normal processing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step 1
Renew your undamaged, current passport by mail if it was issued when you were 16 or older. It must be under your current name unless you can document your name change legally. If you do not meet all these conditions, you need to renew in person.
Step 2
Fill out Form DS-82, Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail (http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/ds82/ds82_843.html) either online (which you later print) or by printing a blank form. Sign the completed form.
Step 3
Put the form in a padded envelope together with your current U.S. Passport and passport fees (see http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/fees/fees_837.html). If your current name differs from the one in your passport, document the name change by including a marriage certificate or court order.
Step 4
Include two passport photos, which can be taken at a passport photo shop or at Acceptance Facilities with cameras, which you can find at Iafdb.travel.state.gov. The colored photos must be measure 2 inches square and have been taken within the past 6 months to show your current appearance. It must show a front view of your full face in front of a plain white or off-white background. You must wear ordinary street clothes and any prescription glasses, wigs or hearing devices that you wear normally. Hats or uniforms are not allowed, but you can wear any religious attire you wear daily.
Step 5
Send the entire package to the address listed on the form. The State Department recommends that you mail your documents using a traceable delivery method such as Priority Mail with Delivery or Signature Confirmation, or Express Mail.
