This short trail to a desert pour-off offers much to hikers interested in the geology of Big Bend. To give some perspective, recall the view of the high, rugged peaks of the Chisos Mountains as you drove down to Burro Mesa. The rock exposed in the cliffs here is the same as is found on the top of Emory Peak, the highest point in the park. Burro Mesa is a down-faulted block, a large landmass that dropped along a fault line approximately 26 million years ago. The extent of the displacement is more than 3,000 feet.
