This 1.9-mile loop trail is an ideal place to get a feeling for the Union resistance to confederate insurgents during the Civil War. Johnsonville was the scene of a fairly embarrassing defeat for the Union Army, which is detailed across the river at the Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park. Here is where a superior Union army, guarding a supply depot along the Kentucky River, ended up being trounced by a small, poorly equipped Confederate force commanded by the brilliant general Nathan Bedford Forrest. Capitalizing on some design errors in the redoubts you will be passing, Forrest’s men were able to take by surprise and completely overwhelm the Union forces at two redoubts, one at the top of the mountain and one near the bottom.
