What Are the Dimensions of a Passport Photo?
Before traveling overseas, and American citizen will need a valid United States passport. Each passport application must be accompanied by two identical passport photos. The photos must meet certain criteria or the passport application will be rejected.


The U.S. Department of State is very strict on passport photo dimensions. They must measure exactly 2 inches by 2 inches (51mm by 51mm).

Eye Height

The applicant's eye height must be between 1-1/8 inches to 1-3/8 inches from the bottom of the photograph.


The passport photo must be taken against a white or off-white background. The background cannot contain colors, objects or images.


The applicant's nose must be in the center of the photo. The eyes must be balanced around the center of the photo.

Head Position

The passport photo must show the top of the applicant's hairline and the bottom of the chin. The distance between the bottom of the chin and the top of the hairline must be between 1 inch and 1-3/8 inches.

Facial Expression

Passport photos must depict neutral facial expressions. Photos featuring smiles, frowns or other non-neutral facial expressions may be rejected.
