One might think of deep-sea fishing when the subject of Florida comes up, but there is a lot of fresh water fishing in the state's many lakes and streams. Panama City is a great place for fresh and saltwater fishing, especially for bass.
 

Time Frame

Bass fishing occurs year-round in Florida, but the best time to catch bass is in the spring when they are spawning. March and April are usually the best months to catch bass. The largest fish are usually caught toward the end of April and May.

 
 

Choices

With 7,600 fresh water lakes in Florida, and with an abundance of fish, choosing where to fish may be difficult. Several lakes and streams near Panama City provide great fishing opportunities.

Fishing guides operate out of Panama City, for either ocean or fresh water fishing. Guides take you to where the fish are and provide all equipment. Trips can be half-day or full-day excursions.

Function

Fishing Clubs, like Bassmasters of Panama City, hold monthly tournaments for members. Bassmasters is the oldest club in Panama City. Some clubs allow non-members to enter tournaments, while others make becoming a member very easy.

Potential

Deer Point Lake, seven miles north of Panama City, is listed as one of the top bass fishing lakes in the state by the Florida Game and Fish Commission.

Types

Bass are known as fighters when hooked, which makes them more fun to catch. Largemouth bass are known for their size, and for fighting beneath the surface. Smallmouth bass tend to fight against the hook more on the surface.
