Most people think of Vegas casinos when they think of Nevada. In truth, the state holds a number of natural wonders for outdoors enthusiasts to enjoy. Some are close to major cities, making them easy to access by road or airport.

Lake Tahoe

Located in the Sierra Nevadas, Lake Tahoe offers 18 ski resorts, as well as summer outdoor activities such as camping and boating.

Ruby Mountains

The Ruby Mountains contain a national wildlife refuge, hiking on the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail, and heli-sking and snowboarding in the winter time.

Las Vegas

Beyond the lights of the Strip, the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers scenic hikes, climbing and horseback riding.


Reno lies along the Truckee River, which holds water activities such as whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking and open water paddling.

Hoover Dam

Lake Mead near the Hoover Dam is a national recreation area, offering camping, swimming, fishing and boating opportunities.
