With the new rules for international travel, people will need passports even for trips to Mexico and Canada. This make travel a bit more complicated. However, getting a passport photo is as easy as a trip to the neighborhood store.
Travel rules have changed because of tightened security after September 11, 2001. According to TravelStoreUSA.com, even trips to America's nearest neighbors--Mexico and Canada--require a passport.
Passport photos need to be 2 by 2 inches and full faced. The background should be white or off-white. The lighting should be natural with no distracting shadows on the photo.
Many local stores provide passport photo services, including Walgreens, Rite Aid, Federal Express, CVS and Wal-Mart. Most of these stores can have the photos done in an hour or so.
People applying for a passport should plan on bringing their photos with them when applying for a passport.
Software exists for people who want to make their own passport photos (see Resources). Travelers interested in creating their own photos should check government websites to ensure that their pictures comply with passport photo rules.
