Maine’s Southern Coast is a typical coastal plain: long sweeping beaches separated by prominent headlands backed by a relatively flat plain. This geography is typical of much of the Atlantic Coast south of Maine. In New England, as the Appalachian Mountains bend toward the coast, the breadth of the coastal plain narrows—and almost disappears east of Portland. The Casco Bay region transitions from sandy beaches to the rockbound coast of the rest of Maine. The transition has less to do with a change in bedrock and more to do with the direction of the bedding in relation to the coast. Along the coast south of Casco Bay, the bedrock is laid down parallel to the shoreline. At Casco Bay the coast begins to bend to the east, and the bedrock juts out nearly perpendicular into the ocean.
