Western Washington is that area west of the Cascade Mountains crest, east of the Pacific Ocean, south of British Columbia, and north of the Columbia River. In these days of highways and roads and well- defined trails, it’s easy to forget the difficulties and dangers confronting the botanists who first explored our region during the nineteenth century. They had to make their way through a hostile landscape, sometimes guided, sometimes not.
