Best Hikes Charlotte by Jennifer Pharr Davis & Johnny Molloy
Although many Charlotte residents like to travel to the beach or to the mountains for vacation, they are surrounded with enough trails to keep them happy and hiking throughout the rest of the year. The city of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have an excellent collection of nature preserves. These preserves are varied in terrain and attractions and—no matter what side of the city you live on—there is a good chance you can drive to a nature preserve in 15 minutes. Charlotte is also fortunate to have several state parks within an hour’s drive of the city. Crowders Mountain, Kings Mountain, Lake Norman, and Morrow Mountain not only offer day- hiking trails, but they also contain campgrounds and recreational opportunities that can keep you occupied and engaged for days at a time.
