The paved trail was created in 1999 with Nature Works funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Look for a playground area shortly after you start, at 0.1 mile. If you like to fish, consider an afternoon relaxing along the lake’s edge on one of the many benches overlooking the water. Don’t mess with the ants! Bring sunscreen and identification books for trees and prairie plants. Includes Lake, Prairie Dock, and Post Oak hikes.
West Union, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 1.9
Located on Cincinnati's lower east side, Ault Park offers a variety of events throughout the year, including dances, wine and jazz festivals, and a Fourth of July celebration. Several hiking trails in this urban park make it easy to accidentally take a side trail. Ault Park, the fourth-largest park in Cincinnati, was name after Ida May and Levi Addison Ault, who were active in the development of Cincinnati Parks. In 1911 the Aults began giving land to Ault Park, donating a significant amount of the 224 acres that make up the park today.
Silver Grove, KY - Hiking - Trail Length: 3.7
Beaver Creek Wildlife Area is just one part of a wonderful wetland complex supporting an array of waterfowl, songbirds, and butterflies. A shallow water aquifer feeds the Siebenthaler Fen.
Alpha, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 1
The museum has a few fossils, but unfortunately much of the fossil wealth of this area has been lost over time. The bison herd is interesting to watch. You may not have cell phone coverage on portions of this hike.
Beaverlick, KY - Hiking - Trail Length: 5.7
Plan to spend at least 3 hours enjoying the many historical features along the hike. Budget enough time to enjoy a meal at the lodge and explore the Pioneer Museum. Includes Licking River, Savanna Loop, and Heritage Loop hikes.
Fairview, KY - Hiking - Trail Length: 3.1
Boone Cliffs State Nature Preserve if a fun hike with plenty of geological discoveries as well as incredible woodland overlooks. The trail weaves through the upland forest and provides several places to sit and enjoy the forest. The overlook is absolutely incredible, so plan to sit and enjoy the view for a while. The fragile habitat and conglomerate cliffs cannot withstand off-trail use, so don't stray from the path. No pets are allowed.
Belleview, KY - Hiking - Trail Length: 1.7
Look for big tulip poplars, red and white oaks, and American beeches.
Silver Grove, KY - Hiking - Trail Length: 2
Note the new entrance location as of 2014 (the time of this publication). The climb to the overlook is steep. If you are hiking with young children, keep them close to you along the cliff line and overlook. As you hike from the lowest point in this hike to the highest, you'll pass through several different habitats including old fields, prairies, and mature woods. Plan extra time to enjoy the view from the overlook area; you'll have earned it.
Lynx, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 4.63 miles
Although this trail does not rate as a hard trail, the section that leads downhill has plenty of steps and is a little difficult to navigate in places.
Oregonia, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 1.53
You’ll find beautiful views and well-kept trails at Caldwell Preserve. Although there is a fair amount of traffic, expect some solitude while you hike.
Elmwood Place, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 2.78
This is a great place to take children for hiking and exploring nature.
Fruit Hill, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 3.7
A botanist’s paradise. Follow the rules and regulations of the preserve, which include no pets.
West Union, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 1
In the museum, you can see, hear, and feel Chilo Lock 34 and Ohio River history. Bring your binoculars to explore Crooked Run Nature Preserve, as several blinds offer plenty of places to enjoy watching nature.
Felicity, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 2.2
Bring a bag and a couple of quarters for turtle food.
Amelia, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 8.9
Everything in the 269 acres of the Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve is protected. Spring is best for bird-watchers and wildflower enthusiasts.
Yellow Springs, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 2.7
Do not go in closed-off areas such as near Big Clifty Falls or the Tunnel.
Madison, IN - Hiking - Trail Length: 6.1
Plan to spend time wandering through the gardens and at the observation blind.
Miamisburg, OH - Hiking - Trail Length: 3.3
Imagine two tracts of old-growth forest that have never been logged. Hiking is permitted throughout the wildlife area, but you should be aware that this area is open to hunting except for the 250 acres surrounding the ranges, clubhouse, and old-growth woods.
Crittenden, KY - Hiking - Trail Length: 1
Finding the trailhead and staying on the trail is difficult because trail maintenance is minimal. You’ll likely have to work around downed trees.
Belleview, KY - Hiking - Trail Length: 1.83
Hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and trail runners all use the trail, so please be courteous.
