Sprawled over three towns in central Essex County, Bald Hill covers 1,700 acres of forested hills and low-lying swamps protected as conservation land. Enjoy a stroll to a hilltop overlook and explore trails adjacent to wetlands. Thanks are due to all the people who saved Wilson Mountain from development in 1994 and kept it natural. Just 10 miles from Boston, these 200 wooded acres could have easily become the site of a mall or housing lots, but instead, thanks to funds made available through the Open Space Bond Bill, it is now managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and is open to all.

This 2.8-mile loop meanders through the Great Blue Hill section of the reservation. It follows the cols between the hills, never ascending to any of the summits.

Borderland was opened as a state park in 1971. Prior to that, it served as the country estate to the Ames family, who named it Borderland because it is on the border of Sharon and Easton. The family constructed the stone mansion in 1910. It is open to visitors for regularly scheduled guided tours in spring, summer, and fall. Hiking alongside water always makes an outing special, and Borderland has no fewer than 6 ponds to explore. The level walking trails at Borderland State Park lead to close-up views of ponds, fields, and forests.

Once a landfill, Spectacle Island offers amazing views of Boston and the coast from the highest point in Boston Harbor. The main ferry departure points are Long Wharf in Boston and the Hingham Shipyard. The former offers more flexible times and is closer to attraction in Boston, while the latter is easy to reach by car. This hike explores Spectacle Island, which has been revitalized after serving as a landfill for many years. This route climbs the North Drumlin, then follows a portion of the island's perimeter trail (which is 1.8 miles long and ADA accessible) as it loops back to the pier.
Winthrop, MA - Hiking - Trail Length: 3
This walk leads to a variety of features, including the Saugus River and its associated wetlands, an outcropping, rocky hills, and ponds. For history buffs, the place to go is the Old Stone Church, located on the shores of the reservoir just off Route 140 about 200 yards past where it splits from Route 12. Hiking is allowed in any area that is not posted. The entrances currently open are gates 6 to 16 along Route 70, gates 17 to 24 along Route 140, and gates 25 to 35 along Routes 12 and 110. The Department of Conservation and Recreation is permitting skiing and snowshoeing on portions of the eastern shore along Route 70 (gates 7 to 15) on a trial basis.
