French River is located on the north shore of the island, overlooking New London Bay, less than roughly 12 miles northeast of Kensington and roughly the same distance west of Cavendish. The main portion of this ride traces a 8-mile loop from French River, through the farming communities of Long River and Park Corner, and around Cape Tryon to New London Bay. There are two worthwhile side trips along the way, however - both short out-and-back spurs that turn this ride into a 12-mile combination. The first is a short 1.4-mile out-and-back trip to the lighthouse at Cape Tryon. Although this site is likely to be windy, the meadow atop the high cliffs overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence makes a wonderful place to stop and enjoy a picnic. Beyond this point and closer to the end of the ride, it is possible to follow a dirt road to the lighthouse overlooking New London Bay. This trip involves a 2.7-mile out-and-back ride to a point from which you will be able to look out toward the sand dunes at Cavendish Beach in Prince Edward Island National Park. There are also two old cemeteries to explore here, which stand as reminders to the arrival of early settlers in this area 200 years ago.
