South Lake is absolutely majestic. On the seaward side it is bordered by barrier sand dunes. These high dunes have evolved into an area largely covered by grass and, in some places, pine trees. To the landward side of this long, narrow estuary are high banks, also covered with grass. We experienced a bird-watcher’s delight on South Lake.As we approached a row of pine trees, nearly twenty herons suddenly emerged from the dark shadows of the branches and in unison took flight for the northeast. The immensity of this airborne flock was startling. The explosion of herons was perfectly timed and coordinated, with no apparent starting signal.
