Directly across from the launching beach is Oultons Island, which used to house a major silver fox farm. Today the island is a privately owned nature conservatory that hosts a major heron rookery. As you paddle across the strait toward the island, you will be startled by the heron racket—a loud crackling of momentous volume—emanating from the dense woodland of evergreens.
