Beginning in Port Dalhousie, the first leg is an adventurous ride along the Merritt Trail as it follows a portion of the original canal and the rushing white waters of Twelve Mile Creek. The route visits Lock 7 in the city of Thorold for close-up view of large ocean freighters and ends in the city of Welland. Leg 2 begins by taking in Welland’s many large murals before crossing Merritt Island to join the Welland Canal Parkway Trail. The highlight of this much easier return leg is the Lock 3 Visitor’s Centre and the waterfront trail from Port Weller to Port Dalhousie. Surface: Asphalt, single track, jeep road, loose gravel. Recommended Bicycles: Mountain/Hybrid.
